Driving in Turks and Caicos

A practical visitor guide to driving safely and confidently in Providenciales and across the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Driving Rule 01

Drive on the Left

Vehicles travel on the left side of the road in Turks and Caicos.

Many vehicles are left hand drive because they are imported from the United States. Take extra care when turning, overtaking and entering roundabouts.

Using Roundabouts

Roundabouts are common throughout Providenciales.

• Slow down before entering.
• Give way to vehicles on your right, including traffic already circulating.
• Wait for a safe opening before entering.
• Stay in the correct lane.
• Follow posted signs and lane markings.
• Use your indicator clearly before exiting.

Speed Limits

Typical speed limits are:

• 20 mph through towns and settlements.
• 40 mph on highways and designated open roads.

Reduce your speed when conditions require it and always follow the posted limit.

Roads and Navigation

Most main roads in Providenciales are paved. Some secondary and rural access roads may be uneven or unpaved. Use only roads that are suitable for the rented vehicle.

• Use a navigation app or download an offline map.
• Allow extra time when travelling to an unfamiliar area.
• Slow down on uneven or unpaved roads.
• Take additional care after dark where road lighting is limited.
• Do not follow a map onto a beach, through deep sand, saltwater, floodwater or unsuitable terrain.

Driving Rule 05

Drive Safely

• Wear your seat belt and ensure passengers are secured.
• Watch carefully for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
• Leave enough distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.
• Do not drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
• Contact the rental team promptly if the vehicle is damaged or involved in an incident.

Stop Safely and Contact QCR

• Stop in a safe place and call 911 where there is an emergency, injury or immediate danger.
• Report every accident, collision, theft, vandalism, warning light or safety-related defect to QCR promptly.
• Collect photographs, driver, vehicle and witness details where it is safe to do so.
• Do not admit liability or arrange a private settlement.
• Do not arrange repairs or towing without QCR approval, except where immediate action is necessary to protect life or prevent serious loss.

Fuel and Longer Journeys

Fuel stations are available in Providenciales, but options may be more limited outside the main developed areas.

Check the fuel level before travelling to a remote location. QCR vehicles must be returned at the recorded fuel level. Missing fuel may be charged at the actual replacement cost plus the approved US$15 refuelling service fee.

Before Collecting Your QCR Vehicle

• Every driver must be at least 25 years old, hold a valid driving licence accepted by QCR and be named as an Approved Driver.
• Bring government-issued identification and any translation, visitor permit or international driving permit reasonably required for your licence.
• A required Rental Protection Package applies at US$20 per rental day.
• A standard US$500 in-person card security pre-authorisation is required before vehicle release.
• A collection inspection and condition record must be completed before departure.

Protection and Financial Responsibility

The Required Rental Protection Package includes the required local third-party motor liability coverage and the Included Vehicle Damage Waiver, subject to the Rental Contract and applicable exclusions.

For a qualifying collision incident, the Maximum Renter Responsibility is the lesser of the actual supported qualifying loss or US$1,500. Excluded loss and prohibited use remain separately chargeable where applicable.

Strictly Prohibited Vehicle Use

QCR vehicles must not be driven:

• on any beach or through saltwater;
• through deep or loose sand, unsafe floodwater or unsuitable terrain;
• for racing, speed testing, towing or unlawful commercial use;
• by an unauthorised or impaired driver; or
• between islands or onto a vessel without QCR's written approval.

Extensions, Late Returns and Completed Return

A 30-minute return grace period applies. Any extension must be approved and confirmed by QCR before the scheduled return time.

After the grace period, late charges may apply under the current Schedule of Charges. An approved unattended return is completed when the vehicle is parked securely at the authorised location, locked, the keys are returned as instructed and the required return evidence is sent to QCR.
